See Newsletter Section for Latest Lifesaving Newsletter Welcome To The Lifesaving Section of R.A.S.C.A.L.S. The R.A.S.C.A.L.S. Life Saving Section has a long established record of producing top quality Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) life savers. Most go on to become lifeguards who not only help out for the club but also the Leisure Centres and beyond. We compete in the RLSS County, Regional and National Finals and have many National Champions. All credit goes to those who have beaten some of the best in the country. Not bad going for a little rural club. But you do not have to want to be a National Life Saving Champion. The most important element is the emphasis on water safety and the ability to keep yourself safe and if required help others without putting yourself in unnecessary danger The transition to Life saving from the development and competitive sections can be made for many reasons. Some specifically wish to be lifeguards and put back into the club some of the time and effort given to them by the many volunteer teachers and helpers. Others feel they need that extra safety in the water from knowing what to do in an emergency. Yet more feel the need to compete in a discipline other than speed swimming, whilst the majority do it because it is fun and a relief from the rigours of competitive training. Whatever the reason for their commitment, it enhances each swimmer’s overall enjoyment and ability to be safe in the water. Anyone interested in learning the art of Life Saving should contact either Jeremy Johnson or Chris Dening at Ripley Pool on Friday evenings. Lifesaving Champions! At the National Lifesaving Championships held at Ponds Forge on Saturday 10th November 2007 RASCALS swimmers once again came away with Gold Medals The RASCALS SERC (Simulated Emergency Response Competition) team, comprising Sandra McRobert, Karen Dening, Daniel Woodthorpe and Christopher Dening, represented the East Midland Region and beat teams from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland to win the Gold Medal. The competition tests team work as well as first aid and water rescue skills – this year in a simulated “open water” emergency.
(Left to Right): Karen Dening, Chris Dening, Sandra McRobert and Daniel Woodthorpe RASCALS had seven representatives at the National Finals and all of them did extremely well. Karen Dening excelled to become the UK Individual Ladies Champion to receive a second Gold Medal. Karen had to show her skills in an aquatic initiative test, first aid initiative test, a timed rope throw rescue and a swim and tow rescue. She gained a “hat trick” of gold medals by winning the rope throw section where she narrowly beat her sister Jo into second place by 0.2 second. Karen is the new National Champion in the individual ladies – Well Done.
It was the first time Jo had represented the East Midlands in the National Finals and she finished a creditable sixth overall in the Individual Ladies. In his first attempt in the Individual Men’s competition Chris Dening also received a medal finishing third in the swim and tow and third overall. Not to be outdone Sandra McRobert also finished third in the Masters Competition. To round off an outstanding day for RASCALS swimmers Laura Parrett and Kristy Russell came first in the aquatic initiative test and 6th overall in the Senior Girls category. Coach Jeremy Johnson is delighted with the team’s performance.

Saturday 15th September, 2007 RASCALS LIFESAVERS SUCCESS !! On 15th September nine RASCALS swimmers represented Derbyshire in the East Midland Lifesaving Championships to decide who would represent the Region in the National Championship Finals to be held on 10th November at Ponds Forge, Sheffield. The whole competition was very close with only a few points separating first and last places. The RASCALS team of Sandra McRobert, Karen Dening, Daniel Woodthorpe and Christopher Dening narrowly beat Nottinghamshire in the SERC event. This is where the competitors compete as a team to assess and deal with a major incident in the pool. Sandra will also be representing the region in Masters competition. Ross Strachan and Adam Forster took revenge over the Heanor team, who were the Derbyshire Champions, to become the East Midland Junior Boys Champions. Laura Parrett and Kristy Russell continued their success of recent years to beat teams from Heanor and Retford to become the Senior Girls Champions. Karen Dening narrowly beat her sister Joanne to the Individual Ladies title but due to Karens success in the National Finals last year both sisters will be traveling to Ponds Forge. To complete a family success Christopher Dening will be representing East Midland in the Mens Individual competition after the narrowest of defeats. After all four sections of the competition - water rescue, first aid, rope throw and swim and tow - Chris was equal points with a competitor from another county and was only placed second on "count-back". However, again due the success of the region last year first and second place will be traveling to Sheffield. Daniel Woodthorpe was one point behind Chris and finished third.
This is a great result for RASCALS
and the whole team would like to thank coach Jeremy Johnson for his
commitment. ![]()
