RASCALS Club Championships Gala 2 was held recently at Alfreton Leisure Centre, and the high quality swimming that was evident in Gala 1 was on show again, with some fantastic performances resulting in 176 personal best times, 7 new Championship records and 5 new ‘Best Ever’ times – a magnificent achievement by the swimmers in this, the 43rd year since Rascals was formed.
Gracie Dawes (12) showed her enormous talent with wins in all her four events. She was close to a number of Championship records, and produced some great swims.
Liam Dawson (11) again had a great gala, with four wins out of four, in 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle and 200m individual medley with new Championship records in the latter three events. The 200m individual medley record had previously been held by Robert Guest since 2004.
Jacob Whittle (12) won three of his four events: 50m butterfly, 100m backstroke, and 200m individual medley, all of which were new Championship best times breaking the previous records held by Jamie Ingram.
Thirteen-year-old George Atkin won the 100m freestyle in a new Championships best time of 59.35, the first 12/13 year old swimmer to break the one minute barrier in this event in the history of the Club Championships.
Matt Barrett was in excellent form, and won all his four races.
A close finish in the 14/15 year girls 100m backstroke saw Georgia Lees touch the wall first, to win her first ever Championship title. Ami Stone Payne won the over 16 girls’ title.
Ten-year-old Anna Booth had a great night in the pool, winning three titles, with Poppy Greenwood winning the 50m breaststroke.
Other winners on the night were: Daniel Towle, Abi Dawson, Seth Bullock, Vicky Threlfall, Travis Dawes, Emily Lyons, Poppy Greenwood, Andrew Parr, Ben Coyle, Lizzy Howe, Cole Webster and Georgia Caddy. Many congratulations to you all.
In addition there were personal best times from: Isaac Caddy, Oliver Coyle, Elliot Lawrence, Harry Quinn, Joshua Atterbury, Thomas Eason, Finn Davidson, Morgan Buxton, Ben Stone Payne, Joel Tannahill, Ben Allsop, Benjamin Holmes, James Forrest, Ruby Smith, Charlotte Marshall, Maddie Grainger, Evie Grainger, Daisy Stone, Ashley Elbourne, Hope Mclellan, Rebecca Pollicott, Freya Layton, Charlotte Middup, Rosie Greenwood, Niamh Connolly, Zoe Radford, Charlie Porter, Cora Stone, Naomi Richardson, Faron Quinn, Sophie Blake, Ellie Butterworth, Ben Scott, Ben Gibson, Isabelle Kimber, Imogen Mee, Jasmin Cooke, Mimi Fisher, Noah Tannahill, Dominic Bradder, Charlotte Marshall, Josh Coyle, Freya Layton, Zoe Radford, Emily Pine, George Whittle, Alexander Scott, James Forrest, Hannah Minshull, Georgie Whysall, Somer Cooper, Lily Hill, Naomi Richardson, Harrison Gregory and Scarlett Swift.
The last race of the night was a swim off between the Rascals swimmers who train with Derventio Excel and head coach Glenn Fisher. Encouraged by a very vocal audience, Glenn did extremely well for a 30-year-old, clocking a very respectable 28 seconds for 50 freestyle behind winner Jamie Ingram. Also taking part were Isaac Caddy, Liam Dawson, George Atkin and Jacob Whittle.
Well done to all the swimmers on a very enjoyable night of swimming, and thanks to our excellent coaching team on continuing to produce such high calibre swimmers.
